The Liar publishes emerging and established artists from Canada and beyond. Every year a collective of Capilano University students works to create and publish the magazine, with the collaboration and guidance of a faculty member. Here’s the 2026-2027 team!

Day Hornsby is a writer and poet in the Bachelors of Creative Writing and Literature at Capilano University, which really just means that they are an expert at submitting their emotional breakdowns for a grade.

Elena is a third-year student in the Creative Writing BA. She has now joined the Liars writers’ team and is excited to “rip apart your pieces.” You can find Elena in the library reading 5 different books at once, questioning her degree.

Glen Greenly is an autistic Canadian poet whose work explores belonging, connections across time and transient landscapes, and the interplay of perception and truth. He received an honorable mention in the League of Canadian Poets’ 2026 Very Small Verse contest. He is working on his first poetry collection.

Little weirdo from the prairies writing her heart out by the ocean. Loves storms, ghost stories, the word “piccadilly,” and bookstore-themed jigsaw puzzles. Has been known to get sunburns and/or learn Swedish for her favourite books, and is an avid collector of nostalgia.

As an emerging graphic designer and illustrator, Mia brings an experimental view to their creative approach. They can often be found playing with After effects, creating their next motion design for their big fat digital footprint. Mia is most known for their creation of Stupid fish, and the cartoon version of them they affectionately named, their “Goober Sona.”

I am a 3rd year IDEA student interested in crafting playful and legible infographics. My background in community organizing means I approach design with the unconventional and often overlooked in mind. I aim to create work that makes looking at data a delight and inspires social change.

First created in a lab by a mad scientist in 1804 and later reanimated by two hippies in the early 2000s, Parker Borden is an amalgamation of horrors disguised as a creative writing major, gothic literature enthusiast, and queer icon.

Rishi Mittal is a queer South Asian writer. Their work has appeared in The Liar, Current Affairs, and the Capilano Courier. They are trying to figure out why they write what they write.

Sarah Norvell is a lover of simple joys, autumn, Halloween and her cats, Wednesday and Pugsley. She expresses her creativity in sewing, needlework, and costuming. Sarah has over 30 works in-progress, and likely only 10 of those will ever be completed.

Sylvie was basically born in the passenger seat of her father’s farm truck speeding into Grand Forks at 140 km/hr. 7 years later her head was run over by her Grandma Jube Jube in a 4×4. These two events don’t directly relate, but it’s cool they both involve vehicles.

Faculty

Holly Flauto lives and writes on the traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and Selilwitulh Nations. Holly’s debut poetry-memoir collection explores immigration to Canada during an era of reconciliation, Permission to Settle (Anvil Press, 2024). Her fiction and creative memoir has previously been published in The Ex-Puritan, Joyland, and The Rusty Toque.
